Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska to California, east across North America to the Atlantic Coast.

Habitat: Fields, roadsides, wastelots, and other disturbed areas.

Flowers: June-October

Origin: Introduced from Eurasia

Growth Duration: Annual

Conservation Status: Not of concern

Description:
General:

Annual, the culms erect to decumbent, up to 1 m. tall.

Leaves:

Sheaths open; ligules nearly 2 mm. long; blades flat, mostly glabrous, 4-8 mm. broad.

Flowers:

Inflorescence a cylindric, congested panicle up to 10 cm. long; spikelets articulate below the glumes, 2-flowered, each subtended by 2-3 bristles; the upper, fertile lemma and palea enclosed by the second glume and lower, sterile lemma.
